UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who is currently visiting Syria, has met with the Syrian interim President, Ahmed al-Sharaa.

Operativ Media reports, citing the SANA news agency, that the meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the Syrian Arab Republic and the United Nations in the humanitarian and development sectors, as well as exploring ways to support post-war recovery and reconstruction.

The UN chief expressed his commitment to Syria's territorial integrity and sovereignty, affirming that the United Nations will continue to support the country's socio-economic development and facilitate the return of refugees to their homes.

António Guterres and Ahmed al-Sharaa also discussed the wider Middle East crisis and regional security issues.

This marks the first visit by a head of the United Nations to Syria since 2009.

He is scheduled to hold talks with Syrian leaders on bolstering Middle East stability and aiding the national reconstruction process.

As part of his visit, Guterres is also expected to travel to Quneitra, home to the headquarters of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), which was established in 1974 to monitor the ceasefire between Israel and Syria.
