Azerbaijan marks professional holiday of state protection officers
Today marks the professional holiday of personnel working in the field of state protection in Azerbaijan.

Operativ Media recalls that on August 23, 1993, the Main Protection Department of Supreme State Authorities and Administration Bodies was established by a decree of National Leader Heydar Aliyev.

Consequently, August 23 is marked annually in the country as the professional holiday of state protection officers.

As a result of President Ilham Aliyev's successful continuation of the national leader's policies concerning the protection system, the sector has undergone rapid development.

The presidential decree "On improving management in the sphere of special state protection," signed on March 16, 2020, marked a significant milestone in modernising the service to meet contemporary demands. Under the decree, three state agencies were established on the foundation of the Special State Protection Service: the Security Service of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the State Service of Special Communication and Information Security, and the State Agency for the Protection of Strategic Objects.

The personnel of the state protection system, specifically the Security Service of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, have distinguished themselves through their professional performance and dedication in crucial tasks, including safeguarding the nation's territorial integrity, preserving socio-political stability, and preventing potential terrorist acts and other provocations—qualities demonstrated once again during the Patriotic War.

Under Presidential Decree No. 491 of August 29, 2025, "On measures to ensure the activity of the State Protection Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan," the Security Service of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan was renamed the State Protection Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

During the First Karabakh War, 13 personnel from the service were martyred, 21 went missing, and 55 were seriously wounded. National Guard regiment commander Afgan Huseynov was posthumously awarded the title of "National Hero of Azerbaijan," and National Leader Heydar Aliyev personally attended the unveiling ceremony of his bust.
