Penalties for gambling have been toughened in Azerbaijan.

Operativ Media reports that this is reflected in amendments to the Code of Administrative Offenses approved by President Ilham Aliyev.

Under the code, participating in gambling will result in a fine of 3,000 manats, along with the confiscation of gambling equipment, wagered funds or other property, and any winnings, prizes, or other income.

If a person who has already been penalized commits the same offense again within one year of the ruling taking effect, they will face a fine of 5,000 manats, with the confiscation of gambling equipment, wagered funds or other property, winnings, prizes, or other income. Alternatively, depending on the circumstances of the case and the offender's profile, administrative detention of up to 15 days may be applied.
