A new settlement previously unknown to science, named Oghlantapa, has been discovered in the Tekle village area of the Jalilabad district.
Operativ Media reports that exploratory research was conducted in the area under the leadership of Associate Professor Anar Aghalarzade, PhD in History, leading researcher at the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) and head of the Mugan Bronze – Early Iron Age archaeological expedition.
Located on the right side of the Jafarli road, 130 meters northwest of the road, Oghlantapa was built on a natural hill. The hill has a diameter of 100 meters and a height of approximately 20 meters.
Ancient river valleys run along the right and left sides of the site. A thick cultural layer has formed here as a result of long-term habitation.
Although initial searches revealed glazed and unglazed pottery samples dating back to the Middle Ages from the upper layer of the site, material culture samples mainly dating to the Early Bronze Age were uncovered in the exposed section of the cultural layer.
The finds are dominated by fragments of brown and gray pottery with hemispherical handles, shards of plate-like vessels, and stone tools.
According to archaeologists, the systematic recording of such sites in the future will help determine the distribution area of Early Bronze Age settlements in the Mugan region and facilitate the preparation of a new archaeological map.
