Leao: "Cristiano has been my idol since childhood"
Portugal national team forward Rafael Leao spoke about wearing Cristiano Ronaldo's jersey and his departure from the team following a 4-2 victory over Denmark.
Operativ Media reports that Leao said wearing the number 7 shirt after the UEFA Nations League match held special significance for him.
"Wearing the number 7 shirt was particularly important to me because Cristiano has been my idol since childhood. My children were also born on the 7th. That is why I am very happy. I did my best to wear this number and shirt with pride. I am happy about our victory," Leao said.
On September 30, Portugal national team head coach Jorge Jesus announced at a press conference that Ronaldo would not participate in the match against Denmark on October 1. Following this, Ronaldo announced his decision to leave the national team camp and said he would reveal the truth about the reasons for his departure when the time comes.
Although Jesus and Portuguese Football Federation President Pedro Proenca tried to persuade the 41-year-old player to change his mind at Copenhagen Airport, Ronaldo refused.
Portugal has won all three matches under Jesus's leadership and leads Group 4 of Nations League A with 9 points. Denmark is in second place with 3 points.
In the next round, Portugal will host Norway, while Denmark will face Denmark away. Both matches will be played on October 4.
