CIS Countries to Conduct Population Census as Close to 2030 as Possible

The heads of state of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) have decided to conduct the next population census on dates as close to 2030 as possible.

Operativ Media reports, citing AZERTAC, that the relevant document was signed following the CIS summit held in Turkmenistan on October 9.

According to the decision, the next population censuses in the CIS member states will be held as close to 2030 as possible. Member governments have been instructed to take measures to support the 2030 World Population and Housing Census Programme.

The Council of Heads of Statistical Services of the CIS Member States has been tasked with agreeing on and approving a list of socio-economic and migration indicators by 2027 to be included in national census programs. This will allow for the comparison of key census results across the Commonwealth countries.

The document notes that the UN's latest ten-year census cycle—the 2020 round—concludes in 2024. National censuses were conducted in nine CIS countries, counting a total of 215 million people, which represents approximately 85 percent of the Commonwealth's population.

In 2025, the UN approved the key documents for the implementation of the 2030 World Population and Housing Census Programme.

To ensure the comparability of results, the CIS Statistical Committee, following discussions with national statistical services, proposed continuing the practice applied during the 2020 round.

This practice involves adopting a relevant decision by the Council of Heads of State, preparing a list of indicators to measure migration and the labor force in line with appropriate rules, standards, and norms, developing methodological recommendations for including related questions in census forms, and establishing table formats for interstate information exchange.
