A rescue operation is underway for the ship that sank off the coast of Northern Cyprus.

Operativ Media reports that the Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Unal Ustel, announced that 172 people have been rescued so far, while six others have died.

According to reports, the vessel began taking on water after being struck by two consecutive waves.

It was reported that the ship first listed to one side and then capsized.

A passenger ship carrying 260 people has sunk near the city of Girne in Northern Cyprus.

Operativ Media reports that the ship sank approximately 4 miles (about 6.44 kilometers) off the coast.

Search and rescue operations are currently being conducted by rescue teams.
