US to ban imports of certain goods from Canada

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has decided to ban the import of certain Canadian products, including specific alcoholic beverages, dairy products, and motorcycles, starting September 29.

Operativ Media reports that this was disclosed in documents released by the White House on September 8.

According to the documents, the specified products will be barred from import into the U.S. starting September 29 due to Canada's "discriminatory measures" in trade.

In addition, the U.S. has expanded the scope of the 50% customs tariffs to be imposed on certain Canadian products. The new measures will take effect on September 15. The list includes specific aluminum and steel products, furniture, and paper products, while cement and industrial salt have been removed from the list.

On September 8, Donald Trump also instructed relevant agencies to exclude Canadian products from the U.S.'s $50 billion annual government procurement plan.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated in August that Ottawa had rejected a bilateral trade agreement that Washington considered favorable.

Following this, the U.S. began imposing 50% import tariffs on certain categories of Canadian products starting August 22.

Canadian Prime Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that he had decided to suspend trade talks with the U.S. and stated that Ottawa would impose retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products. He noted that a "trade war" had begun between the two countries, initiated by Washington.

Donald Trump later announced that the U.S. plans to impose a 50% tariff on Canadian cars, auto parts, and steel starting January 1, 2027.

Meanwhile, Ottawa's retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products went into effect on September 8.
