Jeyhun Bayramov: Azerbaijan is increasing its renewable energy capacity
Azerbaijan is ready to continue playing an active role in ensuring progress on the climate agenda and in other areas.
Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said this during his speech at the official opening ceremony of the 4th Climate Week in Baku, Operativ Media reports.
The minister stated that Azerbaijan complements its international climate initiatives with decisive steps taken domestically.
According to him, the country has submitted its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), aligned with the outcomes of the Global Stocktake.
Jeyhun Bayramov noted that Azerbaijan's renewable energy capacity is growing as a result of launching major solar and wind projects, expanding hydropower capabilities, and implementing clean energy projects with international partners.
The minister said that agreements already signed envisage the creation of an additional 6 gigawatts of solar and wind energy capacity by 2030.
“With these plans, Azerbaijan is poised to exceed the call of the first Global Stocktake to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030,” Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized.
According to him, Azerbaijan is determined to demonstrate that traditional energy-producing countries can become pioneers of a green and sustainable future.
The minister added that the country's policy in this direction is based on the long-term strategic vision of President Ilham Aliyev.
Jeyhun Bayramov stated that Azerbaijan also continues to play an active role internationally in the development of climate diplomacy and related fields.
He noted that activities in this direction continued even after the conclusion of the joint presidency of COP29. In May, Baku hosted the 13th World Urban Forum, which featured global discussions on climate-resilient cities, sustainable urban development, and housing issues.
According to the minister, Baku hosting the UN World Environment Day event in June further strengthened Azerbaijan's role in global environmental action.
Jeyhun Bayramov also stated that work is underway with colleagues from Turkey, Brazil, and Australia to prepare and present a report under the “Belém Mission 1.5 Troika” format.
He emphasized that informal diplomacy also plays an important role in climate matters. He noted that the Shamakhi meetings, held since 2024, bring together chief negotiators from various countries to build trust, resolve differences, and build consensus on complex climate issues.
