The Japanese government is considering the possibility of imposing a new package of sanctions against Russia.
Operativ Media reports, citing the Yomiuri newspaper's government sources.
According to the report, Tokyo's participation in a similar move is not ruled out, amid the European Union's recent increase in sanctions pressure on Russia.
The new restrictions could target vessels belonging to Russia's "shadow fleet." Additionally, expanding export restrictions and tightening export controls are also being considered.
The potential imposition of sanctions is also linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Iturup, which drew a sharp reaction from Tokyo.
