US Lawsuit Involving TikTok Concludes with $400 Million Settlement
The US Department of Justice, the TikTok platform, and its parent company ByteDance have agreed to pay $400 million to the US government to settle a legal dispute initiated in 2014 over alleged violations of children's online privacy laws.
Operativ Media reports that this was announced in a statement by the department's press service.
It was noted that since the lawsuit was filed, significant changes have been implemented in TikTok's ownership structure, management team, regulatory compliance systems, and privacy assurance approaches.
The Department of Justice stated that the $400 million sum is one of the most significant settlement figures agreed upon in cases involving personal data protection laws. Under the terms of the settlement, the platform has committed to strengthening safeguards for underage users, enhancing its age verification system, and rolling out tools that allow parents more comprehensive oversight of their children's activity on TikTok.
Nevertheless, the platform itself has not admitted any wrongdoing regarding the allegations.
