Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc is set to receive an engine penalty at the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Operativ Media reports, citing ScuderiaFans, that the decision is linked to Leclerc's crash on the second lap at the Parabolica corner during the Italian Grand Prix on September 6.

Ferrari had introduced its second power unit upgrade under the FIA's ADUO system. However, the team had to revert to the previous power unit at the Spanish Grand Prix, where Leclerc finished the race in fourth place.

Following the crash, team principal Fred Vasseur announced that the ADUO2 power unit would need to be replaced. Speaking to Canal+, he remarked on where Leclerc would take the engine penalty, saying, "Baku is a very suitable place for this."

According to ScuderiaFans, additional X-ray inspections of the power unit revealed cracks caused by thermal stress. Despite this, the engine is planned to be used during the practice sessions in Azerbaijan before being replaced on Saturday.

Replacing the engine will result in a grid penalty for Leclerc. One of the reasons Baku was chosen is the high number of overtaking opportunities on the street circuit.

Ferrari hopes to replicate the result Mercedes achieved in a similar situation at the Italian Grand Prix. In that race, Kimi Antonelli started from the back of the grid due to a power unit change and won the race by taking advantage of numerous overtaking opportunities.
