Israel Shares Intelligence with US on Iran's Chemical Weapons Plan
Israel has passed intelligence to the United States indicating that Iran is considering the use of chemical weapons against its enemies.
Operativ Media reports that this was disclosed by The New York Times, citing American and regional officials.
According to the newspaper, the intelligence received a mixed response in Washington: while some government officials expressed concern, others questioned the authenticity of the information, suggesting Israel may be trying to persuade the US to resume large-scale military operations against Iran.
The NYT noted that over the past two weeks, Israel assured the US of its conviction that Iran is rapidly developing technology to equip missiles with chemical warheads or is secretly planning to transfer them for future strikes against Israel or another country.
However, Israel provided no proof to back its claims, basing its warnings solely on intelligence assessments. The warnings were also met with skepticism among Persian Gulf states.
Iran previously admitted to developing chemical weapons during the 1980–1988 war with Iraq, but later claimed to have destroyed them.
The White House and the CIA declined to comment. The Israeli military also refrained from commenting on the reports. While Israel's Home Front Command is conducting drills, their program does not include preparations for a potential chemical attack.
