U.S. President Donald Trump sought the views of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev regarding the ongoing war with Iran during an Aug. 8 phone call initiated at his own request.

In response to the U.S. president's question about whether Iran might surrender if the current form of pressure continues, President Ilham Aliyev stated that he does not consider such a scenario possible.

Drawing a historical parallel with the eight-year Iran–Iraq War of 1980–1988, the head of state emphasized that although official Tehran was predicted to surrender at that time as well, the conflict ultimately united the Iranian people even further.

Ilham Aliyev stated that expecting Iran to surrender is unrealistic and that the only way forward is through peace and constructive negotiations. He added that Azerbaijan is interested in establishing peace and stability in the region.
