The price of a liter of diesel in France hit a new record on Sunday, rising to 2.41 euros.

Operativ Media reports that according to calculations by AFP, this figure surpassed the previous record set just a day earlier.

The agency calculated the average price at 10:30 a.m. (CEST) on Sunday, based on data published on the French Ministry of Economy website from more than 8,700 gas stations.

The price of SP95-E10, the most widely sold fuel type in France, also exceeded 2.17 euros per liter on Sunday, according to data from more than 6,700 gas stations. This figure is higher than the previous maximum recorded in 2022, and the price has remained above that level for more than 10 days.

Meanwhile, the average price of SP98 gasoline surpassed 2.28 euros, based on data from more than 6,800 gas stations.

According to the European Commission, France remained one of the European Union countries with the most expensive fuel last week. On September 14, the average price of diesel in the country was 2.29 euros per liter.

On that date, the prices of both gasoline and diesel in Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Finland were higher than in France.

As of September 14, the weighted average price of gasoline in the EU was 2.063 euros per liter, while diesel was 2.159 euros. Both figures represent the highest levels in the European Commission's data series, which dates back to 2005.

The previous record price for gasoline was recorded in 2022. Meanwhile, diesel prices last approached their current level in April of this year.

According to reports, global fuel prices have risen rapidly since February, following the start of a war by the US and Israel with Iran. Renewed conflicts in Yemen and attacks on Saudi Arabia's energy infrastructure have further accelerated price increases in recent days.
