Real Madrid has officially apologized to the Chinese people following comments made by striker Kylian Mbappe regarding former Chinese leader Mao Zedong.

Operativ Media reports that the Madrid club issued a statement addressing the matter. In the release, the club expressed regret over the concern Mbappe's words caused in China and emphasized its deep respect for the country's history, culture, citizens, as well as Real Madrid's millions of Chinese fans.

The club also endorsed the French footballer's public apology, noting that Mbappe expressed regret for his remarks and reaffirmed his respect for the Chinese people.

During an interview, Mbappe referred to Mao Zedong as a "Chinese dictator" while discussing a meme that featured his own face superimposed on the former leader's image. Following his remarks, Chinese state television suspended broadcasts of La Liga matches, and several Chinese companies terminated their partnerships with the player.

On October 27, Mbappe publicly apologized, admitting that his statement was ill-advised and acknowledging that his words had hurt people in China.

Real Madrid added in its statement that it remains committed to the principles of mutual respect and intercultural understanding, and will work to strengthen its relations with China and its citizens.
