The US House of Representatives has passed a bill to tighten sanctions against Russia.

Operativ Media reports that the bill was approved in a vote on September 16, with 262 lawmakers voting in favor and 159 against.

The bill was previously approved by the Republican-controlled Senate on August 7. Having passed both chambers of Congress, the document will now be sent to US President Donald Trump to be signed into law.

The primary author of the bill was US Senator Lindsey Graham, who passed away on July 11. He had been included in Russia's list of terrorists and extremists.

The bill provides for secondary sanctions against high-ranking officials of Russia's political and military leadership, state-owned enterprises, and countries that maintain trade relations with Russia.

Under the legislation, customs duties of up to 100 percent could be imposed on countries that are major buyers of Russian oil and gas.

Additionally, the document includes measures to tighten sanctions against Iran.
