Pashinyan: Armenia's Declaration of Independence is anti-statehood
1 min read

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has stated that he considers the text of the country's Declaration of Independence to be anti-statehood.

Operativ Media reports, citing Armenpress, that Pashinyan made the statement during a Q&A with journalists.

“The existence of an independent state is impossible with this text. This text speaks to the impossibility of the state's existence,” the prime minister said.

Pashinyan noted that the adoption of a new constitution was included in the campaign platform of the ruling Civil Contract party. He added that after winning an absolute majority in the elections, the party is obligated to implement its platform.

The prime minister said the opposition connects the constitutional process to international and regional agendas. He also raised the possibility of increasing public pressure so that the opposition cannot prevent a referendum on a new constitution.

Pashinyan stated he could extend an offer to the opposition that would be difficult to refuse. The prime minister noted there is a high probability that the process will not lead to snap elections.
