Axel Witsel retires from international football

Axel Witsel, the 37-year-old Belgian national team player, has announced his retirement from international football after an 18-year career.

Operativ Media reports that Witsel, who currently plays for French club Nice, shared the news on his social media account.

The player stated that the time had come for this decision and that he wanted to make way for the younger generation in the national team. He noted that he is proud of his achievements during his international career, which began at the age of 18.

Witsel made a total of 140 appearances for the Belgian national team. He participated in three European Championships and four World Cups with the squad.

The 37-year-old midfielder scored 12 goals during his matches with the Belgian national team. Witsel made his international debut in 2008.
