Azerbaijan sues CNN

Azerbaijan has filed a lawsuit against CNN in a U.S. federal court.

Operativ Media reports, citing Report, that the lawsuit stems from the publication of an article containing groundless and provocative claims against Azerbaijan.

An article published by CNN on June 5, 2026, contained a series of provocative allegations claiming that Azerbaijani territory was being used by Israel to carry out military and intelligence operations against Iran.

The article alleged that Israeli special forces were operating in several areas in southern Azerbaijan near the Iranian border to carry out reconnaissance and drone operations, and that Israel had pre-positioned listening devices and other intelligence equipment in Azerbaijan in preparation for subsequent operations against Iran.

Notably, CNN was aware of Azerbaijan's position before the article was published. In response to an inquiry from CNN, the Azerbaijani side had officially denied these claims in advance, stating that Azerbaijani territory is not permitted to be used by any third state for military or intelligence purposes against Iran.

However, despite this response, the material failed to adequately reflect the position provided by Azerbaijan, while the main allegations were presented with references to anonymous sources.

Despite repeated statements that Azerbaijan's territory would not be allowed to be used by foreign forces against neighboring and third countries, CNN's deliberate publication of an article filled with false allegations provoked justified grievance from Azerbaijan.

Following the publication of the article, the Azerbaijani side officially demanded that CNN retract the claims and make corrections. The spokesperson for Azerbaijan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement regarding the issue.

On June 6, June 23, and July 2, the Azerbaijani side sent repeated official letters to CNN demanding a retraction and corrections to the claims made in the report.

Although CNN promised to review Azerbaijan's justified demands, it took no practical steps during this period and did not retract the false claims it made.

Under these circumstances, Azerbaijan filed a lawsuit against CNN in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware—the state where the media organization is officially incorporated—and the legal complaint was officially submitted to the court on August 17, 2026.

It is noted that a one-sided approach regarding Azerbaijan had also been observed in previous reports by Tim Lister, one of the co-authors of the CNN piece. He is known to have published biased claims against Azerbaijan in articles written during the 2020 Patriotic War and the 2023 anti-terror measures.
