Marseille considered withdrawing from Europa League

Marseille considered withdrawing from the UEFA Europa League for the 2026/27 season to focus on Ligue 1.

Operativ Media reports, citing L'Equipe, that such a decision could have somewhat eased the pressure to improve the club's financial situation.

Marseille qualified for the Europa League based on the results of the 2025/26 season, although the club's primary goal was to reach the Champions League.

Failing to qualify for the Champions League led to a drop in revenue. Following this, UEFA investigated the club's financial statements and allowed Marseille to participate in the Europa League on the condition of a significant reduction in their wage bill.

As a result of the imposed restrictions, several key players left the club. Despite this, Marseille was unable to register any new players to its squad. Consequently, the team's squad is considered weaker compared to last season.

Marseille will face Besiktas away on September 17 in the first round of the Europa League main stage.
