McLaren plans to reintroduce its "H-Wing" rear wing design and bring large-scale aerodynamic updates to its car at the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Operativ Media reports that the team first introduced the "H-Wing" solution at the Monza round, while it was not used at the Spanish Grand Prix. McLaren will test the new aerodynamic components during free practice in Baku and decide on their race application based on the results.

McLaren's chief designer Rob Marshall said the team is trying to continue developing the current car in parallel with work on the 2027 car.

In a statement ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Marshall said Baku would be an important testing ground with unique characteristics for the MCL40. According to him, relatively cold brakes and tires when entering the first corner after long straights make tire and brake management crucial, alongside energy and power management.

The chief designer emphasized that the margin for error on the street circuit is very small. He noted that even a minor mistake could lead to major repairs, lost track time, and resources being diverted away from performance development.

Marshall said the team aims to demonstrate confidence, precision, and a disciplined approach throughout the weekend.

He noted that the current regulations remaining in place for next season and the tight competition among the leading group provide motivation to continue developing the car.

According to McLaren's chief designer, the team must strike a balance between developing the current car and working on next year's challenger. Currently, the main focus is reportedly on maximizing the performance of the 2026 car and competing for victories.

Marshall said they expect each of the top four teams to be able to fight for victory in Baku, with the chasing pack increasingly joining the competition. McLaren's goal is to be right in the thick of the battle at the front.
