Messi to play farewell match for Argentina

Lionel Messi has been called up to the Argentina national team for a friendly match against Benin.

Operativ Media reports, citing the official website of the Argentine Football Association. The match is expected to be Messi's farewell game for the national team.

The Argentina–Benin match will be held on October 6 in Buenos Aires.

The 39-year-old player announced on August 31 that he would retire from the Argentine national team. Messi is the team's most-capped player (207) and all-time top scorer (125).

With Argentina, he became a World Cup champion, a two-time Copa América winner, and an Olympic champion.

Messi has won the Ballon d'Or award eight times. The award is presented to the best footballer of the year.

Currently continuing his club career with Inter Miami in the US, Messi played for Spain's Barcelona for many years, winning numerous domestic and international titles with the team.
