US supports resumption of Russian gas transit to Europe via Ukraine
The US supports the near-term resumption of Russian gas transit to Europe through Ukraine.
Operativ Media reports, citing The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), which referenced US, European, and Ukrainian officials.
According to the publication, the proposal was put forward by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and the president's son-in-law Jared Kushner during their visits to Moscow and Kyiv in September.
The initiative envisages selling Russian gas to Europe through a US intermediary. The mechanism reportedly aims to bypass sanctions imposed by the European Union against Russia.
The WSJ writes that Washington also sought to present this proposal to European leaders as a way to lower energy prices ahead of the winter season, amid record-low gas reserves.
According to reports, the White House proposed holding the proceeds from Russian gas sales in a special escrow account under third-party jurisdiction.
The publication also claims that Washington is considering the resumption of Nord Stream pipeline operations as a potential component of a broader deal. This agreement could reportedly encompass resolving the Ukrainian crisis as well as overcoming long-standing disagreements between Russia and US allies in Europe.
