What changes are coming to F1 Sprint races in 2027?

The number of Sprint races on the Formula 1 calendar will be increased to 10 in 2027.

Operativ Media reports that the calendar for the new season has been announced, with the number of Sprint races set to increase by four compared to 2026.

Since the introduction of the Sprint format in 2021, overall viewership for Sprint weekends is reportedly 12 percent higher than for standard race weekends.

The popularity of Sprint qualifying among fans is noted to be up to three times higher than that of free practice sessions. Under this format, Sprint qualifying takes place on Friday afternoon, replacing the second free practice session usually held at that time during standard weekends.

According to reports, 82 percent of fans attending Sprint weekends believe the format adds value to their tickets. This is because competitive sessions are spread over three days instead of the traditional two.

Additionally, it was revealed that 75 percent of Formula 1 fans believe Sprint races bring greater value to the season calendar.

While the number of Sprint races was three per season in 2021 and 2022, it rose to six for the 2023–2026 seasons. In 2027, this figure is planned to reach 10.
