Debbie Hewitt, the head of the English Football Association and a FIFA vice-president, has demanded an explanation from Gianni Infantino over the overturning of US national team forward Folarin Balogun's suspension at the 2026 World Cup.

According to the report, Hewitt also asked Infantino to disclose documents regarding plans to sell a portion of World Cup hosting rights.

A copy of the letter sent to Infantino was also provided to FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström. The letter reportedly contains allegations of a weakened corporate culture and inefficient governance within the organization.

Infantino is required to provide a written response to Hewitt's request by October 15, the date of the next FIFA Council meeting.

During the 2026 World Cup, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee suspended the ban of Balogun, who had received a red card in the US national team's round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina (2-0). Consequently, the player featured in the round of 16 match against Belgium, which the US lost 1-4.

In July, Infantino planned the creation of FIFA Forward Enterprise, a company that would oversee the organization's major men's and women's tournaments. He also supported selling a portion of World Cup hosting rights to private investors.

FIFA announced that the project could generate $4.2 billion in revenue. The initiative was opposed by UEFA, CONCACAF, the Asian Football Confederation, and CONMEBOL.

The 56-year-old Infantino subsequently abandoned the project. Nevertheless, UEFA declared a loss of confidence in him, and several European football federations withdrew their support for Infantino.
