Armenia to withdraw international claims against Azerbaijan after peace deal
Armenia may decide to withdraw mutual claims in international courts and other bodies once a final peace treaty with Azerbaijan is signed.
Operativ Media reports that Lilit Makunts, Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister of Armenia, stated this during a joint meeting of parliamentary standing committees.
Makunts noted that Armenia will not waive its right to defend its interests on international platforms. However, withdrawing mutual claims within the context of existing disputes with Azerbaijan is possible in line with the logic of the peace process. She emphasized that such a decision can only be made after the peace treaty is finally signed.
Under Article 15 of the initialed peace agreement between the parties, within one month of the document coming into force, both sides must withdraw, annul, or otherwise resolve all interstate claims, complaints, objections, and court proceedings regarding issues that existed prior to the signing date.
The clause also provides that the parties will not bring such claims in the future and will not join complaints or legal proceedings brought by third parties against the other side.
