Danish Foreign Minister Comments on Trump's Statement on Greenland
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has described US President Donald Trump's statement regarding the transfer of Greenland to US control as a move aimed at securing a Republican victory in the midterm elections.
Operativ Media reports that Rasmussen made these remarks during a visit to the United States. According to him, Trump's speeches at campaign rallies should be viewed in the context of the midterm elections and the president's communication style. The minister described it as a message directed by Trump to his supporters.
A defense agreement between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland was signed in New York on September 22. The document is expected to be discussed and ratified in the Greenlandic parliament on Tuesday. The Danish parliament is scheduled to announce its stance on the agreement on November 19.
The document, an updated version of a 1951 treaty, outlines options for the US to deploy military bases in the Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig regions of Greenland. Rasmussen stated that the US side has not yet announced concrete plans regarding this.
In late October, Donald Trump claimed during a speech to Republican supporters that Danish authorities had agreed to hand over control of Greenland to the United States.
