The Formula 2 Azerbaijan Grand Prix will feature the most expanded weekend format of the season.

Operativ Media reports that the main race of the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix has been moved from Sunday to Saturday, shifting the weekend schedule forward by one day to avoid coinciding with Memorial Day on September 27.

This change will also apply to the 12th round of the Formula 2 season. Consequently, for the first time in F2 history, two feature races will be held over a single weekend this season.

As the sole support series for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Formula 2 will hold a 45-minute free practice session on Thursday morning. This will be followed by two consecutive 20-minute qualifying sessions in the afternoon.

The sprint and the first feature race will take place on Friday, while the second feature race is scheduled for Saturday morning, ahead of the Formula 1 race.

Championship leader Nikola Tsolov will arrive in Baku with a seven-point lead over Rafael Camara. Gabriele Mini sits in third place, 17 points behind Camara.

With 25 points awarded for a win in both feature races, alongside points for the fastest lap and pole positions in the two qualifying sessions, the title battle could become even more intense.

FIA Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel stated that since the Azerbaijan Grand Prix is the only support race for Formula 2, the decision was made in collaboration with the organizers to implement the expanded schedule.

According to him, the format consisting of a free practice, two qualifying sessions, a sprint, and two feature races is the only weekend setup that allows for additional sessions.

Michel also noted that the standard format will return for the final two rounds of the season in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, which will feature one qualifying session, one sprint, and one feature race.

However, significant uncertainty remains regarding whether the rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi will actually take place.
