Acting President of Venezuela Delcy Rodriguez plans to attend the high-level events of the UN General Assembly starting next week.

Rodriguez could become the first Venezuelan leader to personally attend the high-level week of the UN General Assembly in eight years. According to Bloomberg, the potential visit could be considered a significant step toward the rapid normalization of relations between Caracas and the administration of US President Donald Trump.

The US Department of the Treasury lifted sanctions against Rodriguez in April 2026. This removed one of the obstacles to her potential visit to the United States.

Rodriguez's visit to New York means she will be in the same city as Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who has been detained by US authorities since January 2026. Maduro is being held in a New York prison along with his wife, Cilia Flores.

No information has been provided on whether Rodriguez plans to meet with Maduro during her visit.

The high-level general debate of the UN General Assembly will be held from September 22 to 26 and on September 28 at the organization's headquarters in New York. Heads of state and government, as well as foreign ministers, will attend the events. The Russian delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Notably, on January 3, the US launched strikes on civilian and military facilities in Venezuela, detained Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, and removed them from the country. On January 5, they appeared before the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. Maduro and Flores are accused of involvement in drug trafficking. They have pleaded not guilty.

Currently, Delcy Rodriguez is serving as the acting head of state of Venezuela. Under Maduro, she held the position of the country's executive vice president.
